The scroll held by the Archangel Gabriel reads: "Ave Maria gratia plena dominus tecum," (Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee). These words also begin the prayer "Ave Maria," which was meant to be recited before beginning the Hours of the Virgin each day.
