Tavistock House, London
Sixteenth December 1854
My Dear Sir,
I perfectly coincide in the opinions you so kindly gave me in your letter of the Seventh of this month.  I have no doubt that the best thing my boy can do, is to acquire a general knowledge of business--first, at all events--in a place like Birmingham.  I would rather that he has his initiation in that neighborhood than in any other, because I greatly prefer its people, as well as highly estimate its importance.
Therefore I accept your most friendly offer of assistance, cordially and gratefully.
If you will, at your leisure, endeavour to advance my wishes with any house that you know to be an eligible one for the purpose, your opinion of it will be conclusive with me.  After Christmas I will always hold myself in readiness to come to Birmingham whenever you may let me know that you think you have found what I want; and of course I will bring the Merchant that is to be, with me.
When I see you, I want to talk to you about a small disappointment I have, in my item in the receipts for the benefit of your Institution.  I hoped to have made it £500.  Is not the balance to be got, one of these days?
My Dear Sir
Very faithfully Yours always
Charles Dickens
