 Saturday Eighteenth July 1857.

Dear Sir
On coming here from the country this morning, I found your note—just brought down to me from Tavistock House. I have to act here tonight, and tomorrow morning early to take my second boy[1] to Southampton where he embarks for India.
Under these circumstances, I think it will be best for you to see Mr. Wills (who is altogether in my confidence), at the Household Words, say at 12 on Monday. My ability to be of use to you there, necessarily depends on your ability to propose any kind of papers likely to be available for the Journal.[2]  But I shall be heartily glad to serve you, if I possibly can. Trust me for that.
                                                           In great haste
                                                                     Faithfully yours
                                                           Charles Dickens

Notes:

[1]This was the last time Dickens saw his son who died in India on 31 December 1863. Despite showing early signs of wanting to be a writer, Dickens instructed his tutor to encourage him not to write, stating “The less he is encouraged to write the better, and the happier he will be."
[2] He contributed ten literary and biographical sketches (later reprinted in Footprints on the Road,1864) and two poems to HW, most them in 1857-8. The first sketch, “Beranger”, appeared on 22 Aug (XIV,185).
