Notes: This initial begins the first response of the first nocturn of Matins for the first Sunday in Advent, "Aspiciens a longe ..." (Long had I been watching). In this initial, Christ appears above two saints who look up at him expectantly. This non-biblical scene captures the spirit of the Advent season when Christians prepare for the celebrations of the historic birth of Christ as well as his Second Coming at the end of time.
