Wednesday Twentieth October
1858.
My Dear Dr. Ramsbotham.
Your note and its enclosure have been forwarded to me here. I am still reading in the country, and shall be until the middle of next month.
I have read your Cherbourg Stanzas with much interest and pleasure, and am truly obliged to you for the offer of them to Household Words. But the subject, as to the public, is too decidedly gone by, and they have been too much bothered about it, to admit of my having the gratification of publishing the verses.
My boy received every attention that your kind introduction could possibly procure for him. He was soon, and still is, attached to the 42nd. Highlanders. He went through the last campaign until he was invalided (from fever), and sent up to the hills. When he wrote by the last mail, he was coming down again, quite strong and well, and was about to rejoin the regiment.
Very faithfully Yours
