Twenty Third January 1858.
Sir.
The service you ask of me, is one I cannot possibly render you. So many similar letters are constantly addressed to me, that unless I invariably made a rule of reading no MSS for the purpose of giving abstract opinions on their merits, I could discharge no other avocation in life. I must limit myself to the expression of my regret that your verses are not suitable to Household Words-the only miscelaneous publication over which I have control.
Your faithful Servant
Charles Dickens
