Office of All the Year Round,

Thursday Sixth October 1864.

My Dear Kent. I am truly sorry to hear that you have been suffering again. Like Chorley himself I shudder from head to foot at the remembrance of our having talked so quietly of your former suffering when another operation was impending. God send it may be all past and gone now, and that you may become as strong and as well as I wish you!

Your company on the journey of twenty months, lightens the way, believe me. There are some things in No. 8 wherein I am sure of a small tear or so from you, beforehand. In the midst of all that interest and study, I am stopping now for my part in the Christmas No. here, and am pleasing myself very much (!) which details I mention, because I know you sympathize with them.

When you feel in condition again we hope you will come to Gad’s Hill for fresh air. My daughter Mary and her Aunt have been touched by my account of you, and send you their kindest regard and tender wishes. Mrs. Collins and her husband have gone abroad for his better health; --I don’t know the place, I am sorry to add, where he is likely to find it.

This is noble weather for you and you could hardly be in a better retreat at this season. There and everywhere believe me

Affectionately Yours always

Charles Dickens

Charles Kent Esquire.
