Saturday Fifth February 1870
My Dear Kent
I have been obliged for the time being to change my day at the office to Wednesday. While the Readings last, the difficulty of fighting through all my other work is inexpressible.
I will go to Chapman and Hall’s on Tuesday (I am just now back from two days’ absence), and will take—or make—an opportunity to say what you desire. And of course I will say it as effectively as I can.
This will be, of course apart from the expression of any opinion on the scheme. Mr. Saunders’s confidence in it, is, to me absolutely inconceivable.
The example of the Pall Mall Gazette tends, to my thinking, exactly the other way. You will remember that I doubted it very much (except as an immense relief for you) when you were last here; I have thought of it again and again since; and I looked upon it as an all but hopeless enterprize.
Ever affectionately
CD.
