April 16th., 1863. View of the Mississippi River from behind the rebel batteries at Vicksburg, Miss.. Great guns fire on the Union ships below as they attemp to sneak past under a moonlit night. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant watched from a ship out of range of rebel guns as the spectacle unfolded. The rebel cannon fired more than 500 shots, and all the Union ships were hit repeatedly. Miraculously the eight warships and two of the three transports survived the two and a half hours of the passage.
