Title: Midnight on the Battle Field
Media Type: Engravings
Source: Print and Picture Collection
Notes:

Engraving published by A. D. Worthington & Co., Hartford, CT, showing a famous Civil War nurse, Mary Ann Bickerdyke, attending to a dying soldier on a battlefield at night. Other dead or dying soldiers are scattered around her. A lantern highlights the nurse and the soldier. A fallen horse lies nearby.

Below the caption is a quote:

"It was Mother Bickerdyke, with a lantern, still groping among the dead. Stooping down, and turning their cold faces towards her, she scrutinized them searchingly, uneasy lest some might be left to die uncared for. She could not rest while she thought any were overlooked who were yet living."
