The Battle of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, on November 24th., 1863, formed part of the Third Battle of Chattanooga. The Union victory paved the way for their invasion of the Deep South. The engraving, was published in volume 3 of The War with the South: a History of the Late Rebellion, by Robert Tomes, Benjamin G. Smith, New York, Virtue & Yorston, 3 volumes, 1862-1867.
Union soldiers in the foreground are climbing the steep mountain slopes. One soldier is falling to the ground, presumably hit by enemy fire. In the far distance below, battle lines are visible between billowing clouds of smoke.
