Depicted is General Burnside's Federal "Army of the Potomac" advancing to the north bank of the Rappahannock River below the town of Fredericksburg, Virginia. In the foreground a small boat load of soldiers are about to disembark and climb the heights. Fighting is seen on the banks higher up and other boats in the distance are nearing the shore. Part of the town of Fredericksburg can be seen burning above the river on the top right.
