Title: The Fifth Day of Battle
Additional Title: Razmnama (Book of War)
Rare Book Department
Images of battle figure prominently in this Razmnama manuscript, which is not surprising since the major action of the text is the military conflict between the Pandavas and Kauravas. Indeed, so many pages depict battles that without written clues it is often difficult to correctly identify which confrontation is being illustrated. In this painting, a brief description in Persian located just below the border states that the chief antagonists here are the military guru Drona and the warrior Satyaki. Both support the Pandavas’ cause, but Drona, because of prior promises, is compelled to ally himself with the Kauravas.
