Notes:
Some artists’ hands are not as practiced as others. In this depiction of the blind Kaurava king Dhritarashtra receiving the sage Sanjaya, several of the artist’s preliminary sketches are still visible, showing alterations made to figures’ poses and gestures. Indeed the 1598–99 Razmnama may have been a training ground for apprentice artists. The Persian inscription in red located below the composition ascribes this painting to “Da’ud, brother of Daulat” and might point to a master-student relationship. An experienced artist whose work appears in many imperial Mughal manuscripts, Daulat might have supervised his less experienced brother.
