Travel over the surface of the moon, would be practical, safe and easy in a six-wheeled car, two Chrysler Corporaton scientists told a national meeting of the Society of Automotive Engineers in Detroit. A one-quarter scale model of the moon car (above) was unveiled at the meeting by Lovell Lawrence, Jr., and Dr. Philip W. Lett. They said the wide-wheeled design would enable the moon car to climb across crevasses and over the dusty moon surface effortlessly. Two astronauts could travel in the roving lunar vehicle for surface exploration. The moon car would contain a life-support system for the two astronauts for up to 24 hours. Design of the vehicle was determined after the Chrysler scientists completed hundreds of tests under conditions which are believed to exist on the moon's surface. Mr. Lawrence is director of Chrysler Corporation Defense-Space Group's Advanced Projects Organization and Dr. Lett is chief engineer- Defense Engineering.
