READING THE STRAIN marks in metal using the Chrysler-developed "Photoelastic Stamping Analysis" technique, a metallurgical engineer observes the stamped part at right through a polariscope. The stretch pattern, normally invisible to the naked eye, is evident in this photo because a polaroid lens was used on the camera. In the lab, the engineer sees the pattern in color.
