One of Ceylon’s Interest Spots

Cleveland visits Sacred Temple

 “Nothing could prove more interesting as a setting for the Cleveland Six shown in the photograph than the Temple of the Tooth at Kandy, Ceylon,” states local Cleveland Six distributor.

“This queer structure houses what is supposed to be the original tooth of Buddha. The tooth is described as a piece of discolored ivory, slightly curved, nearly two inches long and one inch in diameter at the base; from thence to the other extremity it is rounded and blunt and decreases considerably in size.

“The sanctuary of this relic is a small chamber in the temple, attached to the palace of the Kandian kings. There are six cases in which the tooth is enshrined and they are placed on a silver table, around which are hung rich brocades.

“At different periods the natives participate in street parades and celebrate in honor of this relic. During these demonstrations the tooth is carried in a specially built shrine, strongly fastened to the back of an elephant.

“Thousands of tourists visit the Temple of the Tooth yearly, as it is without question one of Ceylon’s foremost spots of interest.”
