The letterform used on this piece closely follows the humanistic hand written in Italy in the 15th century. Note how the lower case a and e still carry the cant of the pen yet the type has the evenness of fine printing.
The de Speyer brothers were awarded a 5 year contract to establish Venice's first printing press. Their first book was Epistolae ad familiares by Cicero (1469). The contract was voided when Johann de Speyer died.
