Girard Square was the South Philadelphia country estate and residence of philathropist Stephen Girard, who willed the property to the City of Philadelphia upon his death, in 1831.  The mansion, which can be seen through the trees, was called Gentilhommerie.  Since 1951, the square officially became Stephen Girard Park, under the management of the Fairmount Park Commission.
