Death as a corpse
This cutting can be dated to ca. 1490.
This miniature, which begins the Office of the Dead, was painted by a follower of Jean Bourdichon, a French illuminator active in Tours at the end of the fifteenth century. Bourdichon, who was the court painter to a succession of kings of France, led one of the most prolific workshops in France at this time. The artist who painted the miniatures in this book of hours may have been one of his assistants or students.
