Notes: This folio begins a letter written by Eusebius of Cremona (d. ca. 423) to Pope Damasus regarding the death of St. Jerome (d. 419 or 420). In its style, this manuscript reflects the ideals of Humanists, who tried to emulate the handwriting of the classical Romans. The elegant white vine-scroll initial letter and the relatively clear script that resembles modern handwriting (as compared to examples of Gothic bookhand) were favored by Renaissance patrons because they believed these styles to represent Classical forms. In truth, scribes and illuminators were copying from manuscripts produced in the ninth and tenth centuries during the earlier Classical revival of the Carolingian period.
