Notes:

A highly successful industrialist and founder of the Carnegie Steel Company, Andrew Carnegie was also notable for his philanthropic efforts. These included the donation of over $40 million to support the creation of more than 1,600 new public library buildings across the country. In 1903, Carnegie offered Philadelphia $1,500,000 for the creation of thirty public libraries. The cartoonist shows Carnegie as a Santa Claus figure with a sack full of libraries for the city.
