Notes: This miniature begins Matins of the Hours of the Virgin. The Annunciation represents the moment when the Virgin conceived the Christ Child through the words spoken by the angel. This scene commonly appears at the beginning of this hour in books of hours. The scroll held by the Archangel Gabriel reads: "Ave gratia plena dominus tecum," (Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee). These words also begin the prayer "Ave Maria," which was meant to be recited before beginning the Hours of the Virgin each day.
