Saint Isidore (died 636) was a Christian biblical commentator, and this manual was written for the use and instruction of the Christian clergy. This 12th century copy begins with a large Celtic-esque initial “S,” comprising a red strapwork pattern on a green background.
Notes: Initial S
Notes: This page begins the text of the Sententiarum of St. Isidore (ca. 560-636), bishop of Seville and one of the Doctors of the Church. The Sententiarum is a collection of theological writings meant to serve as a manual for the clergy. Most of the passages were culled from the works of Gregory the Great and St. Augustine. It is divided into three parts and covers subjects such as creation, the nature of evil, ecclesiastical orders, and the judgment of God. This manuscript is one of two copies of this text in the Free Library.
