This outdoor evening image shows Mayor James Tate, addressing the crowd gathered for the opening ceremony for the Columbia Avenue Branch, on April 10, 1962. The branch succeeded the Wagner Institute Branch, which still exists at 17th Street & Montgomery Avenue, as a science and natural history museum.
In 1987, both the avenue and the branch were renamed, in honor of civil rights activist and civic leader Cecil B. Moore, who died in 1979.
The Cecil B. Moore Branch serves North Central Philadelphia, Strawberry Mansion, Brewerytown, Sharswood, and the Johnson Homes.
