Notes:
The superbly original sports berline was commissioned by land baron George Whittell from the custom coachbuilding firm of Walter M. Murphy in Pasadena. The lines of the Murphy built cars were clean, perfectly proportioned, youthful and sporting in a way that befitted a modern motorist of the thirties. The Murphy Company alone was responsible for building more than half the bodies for all the Model J Duesenberg chassis that were produced, a figure estimated at 470. The Model J was built between 1929 and 1936. This car was designed by Franklin Q. Hershey with all metal body and doors gracefully extending into the roof for ease of entry to accommodate Whittell, who was 6’5” tall. Hershey is credited with being the first to employ this innovative treatment.
