Antiphonary
Medieval ManuscriptsItem Info
Language: Latin
Folio Number: 65v
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Initial P with skull and cross
Notes: This page contains the antiphon for Vespers of the Office of the Dead, "Placabo domino in regione vivorum" (I shall please the Lord in the lands of the living). The image of a skull below the cross in the initial P is appropriate for the theme of the Office, which was said in honor of those who had already died and also served to remind the readers of their own mortality.
The similarities in the style of the flourished and pen work initials of Lewis E 221, 222, 223, 226, 229, and 233 suggest they all were made in the same scriptorium, which, according to the colophon at the end of Lewis 221 and 222, was in the monastery of Belém in Portugal.
