This single-wheel trailer has been developed at General Motors Research Laboratories to study tire noise, its origins, and its basic characteristics. The trailer separates the test tire a distance of 40 feet (12.1 metres) from the nearest major noise source, namely the rear wheels of the towing truck. Noise is measured by probes on the roadside, on the trailer, and within the tire tread itself.
