With gas turbine engine “fired up”, Driver Mauri Rose signals his crew to pull wheel chocks and get General Motors’ XP-21 Firebird under way at the GM Desert Proving Ground near Phoenix, Ariz. The first gas turbine automobile in the United States, the GM experimental vehicle was built to test the potential of a turbine for ground transportation. The Firebird has an aircraft styling motif.
