Haynes and Apperson automobile partnership
The accompanying photograph shows the historical birthplace of the American automobile industry. It was in this humble cottage in Kokomo, Indiana, that Elwood Haynes, President of the Haynes Automobile Company, in 1893, invented, designed and built the first mechanically successful automobile. During the construction of the machine the engine was set up in the kitchen in the rear, and after, when America’s “First Car” was completed, it was housed in the little red shack behind the house. From a modest start, twenty-seven years ago, in Mr. Haynes’ kitchen, the automobile industry has expanded by leaps and bounds to the third ranking American industry.
