While America remained a British colony, it was forbidden to publish an English language bible. Although the Continental Congress initially planned to sponsor an American edition, Philadelphia printer Robert Aitken independently produced an edition of the New Testament in 1777. Immensely popular, Aitken printed the whole Bible in 1782, including an endorsement from Congress.
