 The formal gardens behind the Water Works were built in the 1830s.  There were landscaped paths and fountains.  Paths led up to the reservoir on the top of the hill. The gardens were a popular destination for Philadelphians and tourists alike.  When the gardens were restored several years ago, the designers looked at old prints in order to re-create what had been there.  [Excerpt from the Print and Picture Collections' exhibition 2015 label].
