Photographic portrait of the Irish-American marine painter James Hamilton (1819-1878). Hamilton was known in his lifetime as "the American Turner" because of his admiration for and the influence J. M. W. Turner had on his work. He was also the teacher of Thomas Moran, the acclaimed American landcsape artist of the Hudson River School.
