Translation:

[1] I come now as a poor guest, O Lord, to your table that you prepared for me, that it may refresh my heart, when soul’s hunger gnaws on me, when the thirst of the spirit plagues me until I wipe off the sweat.

2) Now you, bishop of souls, speak there: I am the bread of life; this bread drives away the hunger, for nothing else can support. I am the drink; who believes in me, eternal thirst shall not pierce the heart.

3) Therefore lead me, o faithful shepherd, to your heavenly pastures until my soul will be refreshed; when you let them see the streams of your goodness that you have ready for all who trust your protection.

4) I, poor lamb, look for you on your green pastures; your life’s manna flows to comfort me in all my sufferings. I drink your precious blood, so that no false possession may separate me from you.

5) Just like the deer’s tired heart cries for fresh water, so too cries my soul’s pain, that I may be freed from my heavy pain of sin, and grant me a flood of comfort that makes my salvation flourish.

6) Above everything, however, create in me an unfeigned remorse; that I shrink from sins as from a wild animal. Throw upon me the coat of faith that your rewards [text breaks off]

Notes:

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered. The text, with the first three lines in prominent letters in fraktur and the remainder in German script, extends across the entire document. A decorative zigzag border separates the two sections. The first letter is written in particularly large and decorative calligraphy. Two hearts with text are in the lower corners. The text is a Mennonite communion hymn contained in both the Franconia and Lancaster Conference hymnals.
