Translation:

I desire to depart and be with Christ.

[Stanza 1:] The noble shepherd, God’ son, beloved by eternity, left his kingdom, hid his crown and walked around sorrowfully. He came and carried out of love and pain with frightened bearing his poor lost little sheep that went astray on earth

Stanza 2: And when he fortunately found it, caressed it and embraced, and right away carried it home in his arms. Then came the wolf and attacked him with his pack, and he wanted to lead him onto the false path along with his little sheep.

Stanza 3: When the faithful shepherd saw this, he entered into danger, jumped in front and came near him, and offered himself alone. He fought, he struggled, experienced pain from these hellish sins, and let himself be beaten and wounded to his heart.

Stanza 4: He fought until his strength left him and his spirit gave up, when one took him away dead and mournfully brought to his grave. But this death and fall was successful for him, for he therewith, as God, destroyed and pushed out the wolves.

Stanza 5: This preciously honored sheep are you, O my soul; for you he came into this pain, for you in the grave’s cave. Therefore go forth and give him thanks with faith and pure life, and do this as his song of praise, with love and soul’s devotion.

Notes:

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered. The text, with the first two lines in prominent letters in fraktur and the remainder in German script, extends across the entire document. A decorative border separates the two sections. The initial letters of the first four words are written in particularly large and decorative calligraphy. Various flowers adorn the areas next to and above the first line. The owner’s name and date within a rectangular frame are in the lower right corner. A bird on a branch is above it. An undated, nearly identical fraktur is in the collection of the Bucks County Historical Society.
