Wer am Sonntag arbeitet, der ist verflucht. \ Demnach gebiete ich, daß ihr am Sonntag nicht \ arbeitet, sondern andächtig in die Kirche gehet; \ aber euer Angesicht nicht schmücket; ihr sollt nicht \ fremdes Haar tragen, und sollt nicht Hoffahrt \ treiben; von eurem Reichthum sollt ihr den Ar= \ men geben, reichlich mittheilen und glauben, daß \ dieser Brief mit meiner eigenen Hand geschrieben \ und von Christo selbsten ausgesandt sey, und daß \ ihr nicht thut, wie das unvernünftige Vieh; ihr \ habt sechs Tage in der Woche, darinnen sollt ihr \ eure Arbeit verrichten: aber den siebenten (näm= \ lich den Sonntag) sollt ihr heiligen; werdet ihr \ das nicht thun, so will ich Krieg, Hunger, Pesti= \ lenz und Theurung unter euch schicken und euch \ mit vielen Plagen strafen. habt vielmehr Mitleiden mit ihm, so wird es euch \ wohl gehen. \ Ihr Kinder! ehret vater und Mutter, so wird \ es euch wohl gehen auf erden. Wer dies nicht \ glaubt und halt der ist verdammt und verloren. \ Ich, Jesus, habe dieses selbsten mit meiner eige= \ nen Hand geschrieben, wer es widerspricht, und \ lästert, derselbe Mensch soll keine Hülfe von mir \ zu erwarten haben, wer den Brief hat und ihn \ nicht offenbaret, der ist verflucht von der christli= \ chen Kirche, und wenn eure Sünden noch so groß \ wären, sollen sie euch, wo ihr herzlich Reue und \ Leid habt, doch vergeben werden. \ Wer es nicht glaubet, der soll sterben und in \ der Hölle gepeinigt werden, auch ich werde am \ jüngsten Tage fragen um euer Sünden willen, \ da ihr mir dann antworten müsset.\ Und derjenige Mensch, so diesen Brief bei sich \ trägt, oder in seinem Hause hat, dem wird kein \ Donnerwetter Schaden zufügen, er wird Für \ feuer und Wasser sicher sein, und wer ihn offen= \ baret vor den Menschenkindern, der wird seinen \ Lohn haben, und fröhliches Abscheiden aus dieser \ Welt empfangen.

A letter, written by God himself, and brought down in Magdeburg.

It was written in golden letters and sent from God by an angel. Give it to the one who wants to copy it; the Lord stays away from the one who scorns it.

Who works on Sunday shall be cursed. Therefore I command that you shall not work on Sundays, but instead go devoutly to church. But don’t adorn your face, you shall not wear foreign hair, and you shall not be vain. from your wealth you shall give to the poor, talk about diligently and believe that this letter was written with my own hand and from Christ himself sent out, and that you don’t do as the stupid cattle does. You have six days in the week when you can do your work, but the seventh (that is Sunday) you shall bless. If you will not do this I will send to you war, hunger, pestilence and dearth, and punish you with many plagues. I also command you, everybody, regardless of what he is, young or old, small or big, that you shall never work late on Saturdays, but you shall repent your sins that they may be forgiven for you. Don’t yearn for silver and gold, don’t commit the lust and desires of the flesh; consider that I made you and that I can destroy you again. Don’t rejoice when your neighbor is poor,

have much pity with him, and you will fare well. You children! Honor father and mother, so that you will fare well on earth. Who does not believe this is damned and lost. I, Jesus, wrote this myself with my own hand; and who contradicts and blasphemes this shall not expect any help from me. Who has the letter and does not reveal it is cursed by the Christian church, and if your sins may be this great they shall be forgiven you, who have plenty of repentance and suffering. Who does not believe it shall die and be punished in hell; I too will ask on the Day of Judgment about your sins when you will have to answer me. And such a person who carries this letter with him, or has it in his house, shall not suffer damage from a thunderstorm, he will be safe from fire and water, and who reveals it to the people shall have his reward and receive a happy departure from this world.

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered. The text in Fraktur extends across the entire document. The title is written in particularly prominent letters. Next to it are two angels bearing letters, and below it is a male figure with a robe, halo, and one arm raised. The text body is arranged in two columns. The entire document is enclosed by a decorative border.

Kollner produced at least four lithographed editions of Himmelsbriefe or Heaven-Letters, also called Letters from God, a popular type of broadside among the Pennsylvania Germans in the mid-19th century.  The heaven-letter tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, involving a letter from heaven sealed by St. Peter that was brought to Earth by a raven.
