Text for this photograph--taken on the roof of the Franklin Institute--is from The Evening Bulletin, October 15, 1957:  "Volunteers from Operation Moonwatch are thrilled by a very good view of Sputnik as it sailed over this morning at about 6:04 am....the long row of positions is called a Moonwatch Station.  Sputnik was quite visible to the naked eye..."
