Notes:

This 1931 aerial view shows City Hall, Broad Street Station, and the elevated railroad viaduct, which was dubbed the “Chinese Wall,” (a reference to the Great Wall of China).  This formidable system of tracks extended west for nine city blocks, to the Schuylkill River, and it created a barrier to everything northwest of it.  Much of it was demolished, along with Broad Street Station, in the 1950s, but portions of it remain alongside and beneath today’s John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
