Photograph #4866, June 17, 1925
This 1925 aerial photograph shows a section of Center City, known since the 1970s as Old City. On the lower left of the photograph is crescent-shaped Dock Street and the historic Dock Street Market, with its awnings lining the street. At the extreme center left, one can see the spire of Christ Church, located at 20 N. American Street (near 2nd & Filbert Streets). On the right is the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, under construction. Bordering the docks along the Delaware River are Delaware Avenue and the elevated rapid transit trains, or “the El.” (Most of the structures to the left of them were demolished in the late 1950s, for the construction of Interstate 95 and the redevelopment of Society Hill.)
