Birth and Baptismal Certificate
To these two married people, namely Daniel Schäfer and his lawful wife Maria, a born Hollenbach, a daughter was born into the world on the 27th of January 1836. This daughter was born in Lower Mahonoy Township, in Northumberland County, in the state of Pennsylvania, in North America, and received through the holy baptism the name Salome, on March 30, 1835, from the honorable Mister Johann Nickolaus Hemping. The sponsors were Elisabeth Lenker, widow.

Notes:

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered. The text in Fraktur is enclosed in box. Above it are two trumpeting angels within a wreath. On each side is an angel, one holding a lyre and wreath, and the other with a cornucopia of flowers and a bird. Below is a scene of baptism. At bottom center are two putti, one with a wreath and one with a branch, each flanked by an ark, one topped with a bird, the other with a bird holding a branch. The entire document is framed by a solid border.

The motifs on this certificate are copied from printed certificates produced by Jacob Baab of Harrisburg, PA from c. 1827-c. 1832.
