Baptismal Certificate
To these two married people namely Johannes Kerkendal and his lawful wife Christina, a born Sentiesen, a daughter was born into the world named Christina, in the year of our Lord Jesus 1818, the 12th of August at 12 o’clock at night, in the sign of Pisces. This Christina was born and baptized in America, in the state of Pennsylvania, County Northampton, Township Nazareth. Above mentioned Christina was baptized the 27th of August by Mister Thomas Pomp. Sponsors Jacob Hertzell and his wife Magdalena. And she was confirmed in the year of our Lord 1834 by Mister Thomas Bumb Reformed preacher, and entered into matrimony the 3rd of January 1836. Notes:

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered. The main text in German script is within large heart in center. The two verses in Fraktur are within smaller hearts on bottom right and left. The hearts are surrounded by vines, flowers, rosettes, a star, tulips, and two birds sitting on a flower stem. The confirmation and marriage notices were added later, in a different hand. Pastor Pomp’s name is spelled Bumb in this addition.

The design was copied from certificates printed by John and Samuel Baumann at Ephrata, c. 1808-1816 (see FLP 261). This is the only known fraktur made by Jacob Hartzell, likely the same Jacob Hertzell who is listed as the sponsor at Christina's baptism along with his wife.  This Christina Kerkendal is likely the same one who married Paul Wunderling in 1836.
