Von der Erden eitlen Dingen \ meines Herzens Augen schwingen \ sich, Herr in dein Himmels=zelt \ wo du dich so hoch gesetzet, \ da wird meine Seel ergötztet \ gute nacht du schnöde welt \ meinen geist befehl ich dir \ Jesu! bewahr ihn mir. 

Nun fahr ich hin zu Jesu Christ \ Mein arm thu ich ausstrecken \ bald schlaf ich ein, und ruhe fein, \ kein mensch kann mich aufwecken \ Als Jesu christus, gottes Sohn \ der werd die Himmels=thür aufthun \ Mich führen zum ewigen Leben.

Nun geht ihr matten glieder \ geht hin und legt euch nieder \ zu schlafen ihr begehrt \ es kommt die stund und zeiten \ da man euch wird bereiten, \ ein sanftes Bette in der erd.

Samuel Kreebel
From the world’s vain things my heart’s eyes sway, Lord, to your tent of Heaven, where you have set yourself so high. There, my soul will be amused. Good night you disdainful world. I command my spirit to you, Jesus, preserve it for me.

Now I go on to Jesus Christ. I am stretching out my arm, I soon fall asleep and rest well. No human can wake me up, except for Jesus Christ, God’s son, he will open Heaven’s gate, lead me to eternal life.

Now go you tired members, go forth and lie down to the sleep you long for. The hour and time will come when someone will prepare you a soft bed in the earth.

Notes:

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered. The main text is within three rectangular frames in the center of the document. The artist’s name is in prominent letters in the top center. Two verses are within hearts in the lower corners. From each heart protrude two stems of tulips as well as a straight pole that is topped by a fan. The text is written in a hybrid Roman-German script, with some letters in Roman style and others in German style.
 

The initials and FLP 168, inscribed with the initials SK likely for Samuel Kriebel, bear some relationship to works by Benjamin Kriebel (1780-1844) dated 1803 and 1805.
