[def.] Umble 1802

Category: Drawing
Media Type: Drawings
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes:

According to Daniel and Kathryn McCauley (see bibliography), Umble is an uncommon Germanic surname. Only one Amishman with this surname is documented as coming to America: Christian Umble (1749-1821), an orphan who emigrated with the Hans Blank family from Switzerland in 1751. He married Barbara Blank about 1780 and they had three children, one of whom may of been the owner of this drawing.

Notes:

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered. In the lower portion of the document are two rosettes within circles, from which protrude a variety of leafy stems of flowers. Several birds are sitting on the branches. In the top center is an eagle. Along the lower edge is a decorative border with a heart. A name and date, the first part of which is missing due to a loss in the document, is below it. The entire document is enclosed by a decorative border.
