Title: Washington Monument fountain
Print and Picture Collection
This is a ca. 1935 image, taken by amateur Philadelphia photographer Claude Alexander, showing the Washington Monument fountain, situated inside Eakins Oval, a large traffic circle in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps. Originally located at the Green Street entrance to Fairmount Park in 1897, the monument was moved to its permanent location in 1928, when the Benjamin Franklin Parkway was completed. In the background to the right is Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
