Notes:
This is a 1935 image, taken by amateur Philadelphia photographer Claude Alexander, of the beach and marquee outside Steel Pier, Atlantic City, NJ. In the foreground is an area, with sculptures of Poseidon and a mermaid, providing a background for artists to make souvenir sketches of visitors; the top of the booth states, "tips accepted for sketches." The Steel Pier marquee boasts a wide variety of entertainment, including vaudeville, movies, circus acts, dancing, "animal oddities," a gorilla, children's shows, a Ford V-8 engine exhibit, and popular flame dancer Muriel Page--in short, as advertised, "A Vacation In Itself."
