Notes:

German printmaker and painter, 1471-1528;

Artist's monogram on tablet with date to the left of center;

St. Anthony (c. 250-350 CE) was the first Christian monk. He lived in Egypt and loved poverty, piety, and scholarship.  Traditionally, shown in the desert surrounded by fantastic creatures, here St. Anthony is shown dominated by the scenery of a cityscape which may have been based upon a drawing Durer made many years earlier.   The city in the background may be Trent.

During a trip he made to the low countries in 1520-21, Durer gave away copies of this print as gifts on six occasions.

This print demonstrates the artist's skill as an engraver which is evident in the print's delicate lines and complexity of detail.
