In July 2009, American hikers Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer, and Josh Fattal were arrested by border guards for unknowingly crossing over to Iran from Iraqi Kurdistan.  Detained, accused of espionage, and held in Tehran’s infamous Evin Prison, their surreal and traumatic ordeal reads like the stuff of Kafka.  Over the next two years their imprisonment made international headlines and became a major point of contention in diplomacy between the United States and Iran.
