Jane Golden and David Updike | Philadelphia Mural Arts @ 30
Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2014, the Mural Arts Program of Philadelphia has produced more than 3,800 murals and public art projects that have brightened every Philadelphia neighborhood. Under the guidance of Jane Golden, the program has engaged thousands of people of all ages from across the city, and demonstrated how participatory public art can empower individuals and foster collective healing. Philadelphia Mural Arts @ 30, edited by Jane Golden and David Updike, traces the program’s history and evolution. Essays by policy makers, curators, and educators offer valuable lessons for artists, activists, and communities to follow, and acknowledge the challenges and rewards of growth while maintaining a central commitment to community transformation.
