Dr. Louis Sullivan served as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1989 to 1993, during which time he spearheaded initiatives to improve FDA food labels, educate Americans about the dangers of tobacco use, and address the AIDS crisis. The Founding Dean of the Morehouse School of Medicine in 1975, Sullivan has held numerous leadership roles in corporate and nonprofit organizations, including the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools, General Motors, Africare, and the eponymous Sullivan Alliance to Transform the Health Professions. From his childhood in the Jim Crow south to his extraordinary work as a physician, policymaker, and health advocate, Breaking Ground details Sullivan’s impactful life.
