Her memoir, The Worst Thing We’ve Ever Done: One Juror’s Reckoning with Racial Injustice weaves together the stories of her 21-day jury sequestration in the murder trial of  Frederick Muhammed Burton, one of two Black prison inmates charged with the 1973 murders of two white Philadelphia prison wardens and, four decades later, her personal journey coming to terms with how her youth, naiveté, and white privilege may have led her to falsely convict a man whose shoes she never could have walked in.

The Worse Thing We’ve Ever Done: One Juror’s Reckoning with Racial Injustice was recently recognized by the American Bookfest Award as a finalist in the creative non-fiction category.

Writer, author, and criminal justice reform advocate Carol Menaker lives in the Sierra Foothills of Northern California.
